The vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) have gained increasing attention due to its safety and pollution-free features. In this paper, a two-dimensional transient MHD model is used to study the time characteristics of arc with large contact diameter and different breaking speeds. The characteristics of the arc under different electrode opening speeds are simulated, and the diffusion process of the arc along radial direction is set according to the experimental results. The simulation results reveal the characteristics of the arc under different electrode opening speeds. This provides some theoretical references for determining the electrode opening curve.The simulation results of this paper are in good agreement with the experimental results.
